Why ChatGPT recommends your competitor and not you

AI assistants do not rank pages. They repeat what the web says about a category. Here is how that works and how to become part of the answer.

Try it yourself

Open ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity and ask: "Who is the best [your category] in [your city]?" Read the answer. If your business is not in it, this article explains why, and if it is, it explains how to keep it that way.

Assistants do not rank pages

Google ranks pages: it finds the ten most relevant pages and lists them. An AI assistant does something different. It reads what many sources say about a category in a place, forms a picture of which businesses are consistently described as established and good at that thing, and names them. It is answering "who do credible sources say is good", not "which page matches these words".

That means three things decide whether you appear:

Whether you are described at all. If no local publication, directory, review site or comparison article mentions your business in connection with your category, the assistant has nothing to work with.

Whether the descriptions agree. If one source calls you a "dental office", another a "cosmetic dentistry practice" and your own website says "smile studio", the assistant is less confident about what you are. Consistency is a signal.

Whether the sources are ones the assistant trusts. Local news, well-known directories, industry publications and established review platforms weigh more than a profile you filled out yourself.

Why your competitor is there

Usually because they have been mentioned more, more consistently, in more trusted places, often without trying: a newspaper piece, a "best of" list, a chamber page, an association directory, a well-maintained profile on the two or three review sites that matter in the category.

What to do about it

  1. Say exactly what you are, everywhere. Same category words on your website, your Google profile, your directory listings and your social profiles.
  2. Get described by others. Local press, industry publications, comparison articles and directories that matter in your category. This is the work behind our Digital PR and AI Search Optimization services.
  3. Publish the answers. Pages on your own site that answer the questions people ask assistants, clearly and specifically, with your location and your credentials.
  4. Let assistants read you. Do not block their crawlers, and publish an llms.txt file that summarizes your business for them.
  5. Check monthly. Track a set of prompts and see whether your name appears, in what position, and described how.

How we measure it

We keep a prompt set for each client and run it against each assistant every month, logging mentions, positions and descriptions. You can check any single prompt yourself with our free AI Visibility Checker.

Where assistants get local information

Each assistant leans on different sources, but the overlap is large: Google Business Profile data and reviews, well-established directories in your category (Healthgrades, Avvo, Houzz, Yelp, TripAdvisor and their equivalents), local news and city publications, industry associations, "best of" and comparison articles, and your own website if it is crawlable and clearly written. Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews show their sources, which makes them the easiest place to see exactly who is being read about you and your competitors.

Test it properly

Run the same prompt three times in a row; answers vary, and you are looking for how often you appear, not one lucky result. Try it phrased as a person would: "I need a good pediatric dentist in Oviedo, who do you recommend and why". Note which competitors appear and what is said about them. Then look for the sources. Perplexity cites them directly. For ChatGPT, ask a follow-up: "what sources did you use". You now have a list of the exact places you need to be described.

The fixes in order

Start with your own properties because they are free and fast: your website's about and service pages, your Google profile description and categories, your directory listings. Make them say the same thing in the same words. Then get described by others: pitch local publications, get listed in the association directories for your category, and pursue the comparison articles that keep appearing in the sources. Then measure monthly. The first two steps take a month; the third is ongoing.

What "consistent description" looks like

"Bright Smile Dental is a family and cosmetic dental practice in Oviedo, Florida, offering implants, Invisalign, emergency care and pediatric dentistry, accepting Delta Dental, Cigna and Aetna, open Saturdays." That sentence, or one like it, should exist nearly verbatim on your homepage, your Google profile, your Healthgrades listing and your Facebook page. It sounds repetitive to a human. It is exactly what a machine needs.

Blocking the readers by accident

Many websites block AI crawlers in robots.txt without knowing it, often because a plugin or a hosting company added the rule. Check that GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended are allowed. If you block them, you can be the best business in your category and the assistant will describe your competitor instead, using their site as the source.
