The situation

Ranking an SEO agency for "SEO" in its own city means competing against every other agency that does this for a living. Our home page held the #1 organic position for "Orlando SEO Expert" for seven straight years, alongside first-page positions for the related Orlando SEO searches.

What worked

A page that actually answered the search. Not a list of services, but a page about what an Orlando business should expect from SEO, with specifics, prices and proof. It was updated every quarter.

Authority from real places. Mentions and links from Orlando business publications, partners, clients and directories, earned over years, never bought in bulk.

Consistency everywhere. The same name, address, phone and description on Google, on the site and on every citation, for over a decade.

Patience. The page did not rank #1 in the first six months. It got there and stayed there because everything around it kept getting better.

What went wrong, honestly

In 2026 a Google core update reset the site's rankings. Two things we had allowed onto the site over the previous year were the likely cause: a set of productized link-building service pages, and a batch of thin city-and-topic articles published in bulk. Both are the kind of content Google's recent updates target, and both were on our own domain.

What we did about it

We rebuilt the site from scratch in September 2026: every service on one page per keyword cluster, city pages only where we can write real local content, every claim on the site verifiable, no productized link services, published prices, and the old URLs mapped one by one to their replacements or retired. The rebuild is the site you are reading now.

We tell this story because it is the same conversation we have with clients whose rankings dropped: find the specific cause, remove it, rebuild on what actually works, and report progress monthly.

What the page actually looked like

The page that held #1 was long, specific and useful. It explained what an Orlando business should expect from an SEO engagement, what it costs, how long it takes, what the monthly report contains, which neighborhoods and industries we had worked in, and what we would not do. It was rewritten every quarter to reflect what had changed in search. It linked out to service pages and to real client work. It was not a landing page with a form and three bullet points, which is what most competitors published.

How authority was built

Over years, not months. Mentions from Orlando business publications, the chamber, partners, clients who wrote about their results, and directories that matter in the marketing category. Speaking and community involvement that produced natural coverage. No purchased links, no networks, no guest-post packages during those seven years. Authority earned that way does not evaporate when Google's link algorithms change.

The decision to rebuild rather than patch

After the 2026 update, we had a choice: remove the problem content and wait for the next update, or rebuild. We chose to rebuild because the problem content was not a few pages; it was a pattern that had been allowed to grow, and the site's structure had become a mix of the good original pages and the newer bulk pages. A clean structure, one page per keyword cluster, city pages only where we could write real local content, and every claim verifiable was faster to build than to untangle.

How the old URLs were handled

Every one of the 351 URLs in the old sitemap was mapped by hand. Strong old pages redirect to their replacements. Old posts with real value were migrated and refreshed. Thin bulk pages were retired with a 410 status unless they had earned real links, in which case they redirect to the closest relevant page. The link-selling pages were retired outright regardless of links. This is the same process we run for clients after a penalty or a migration.

What we tell clients now

Most ranking drops in the last two years have the same cause: content that exists to rank rather than to help, and links that were bought rather than earned. The fix is not a trick. Find the specific cause, remove it, rebuild on what actually works, publish your prices, and report progress monthly. We say it with some authority because we have done it to ourselves.
